Fringe follows the casework on the Fringe Division, a Joint Federal Undertaking Force supported primarily with the Federal Bureau of Study, which includes Agent Olivia Dunham; Dr. Walter Bishop, the archetypal mad scientist; and Peter Bishop, Walter's estranged son along with jack-of-all-trades. They are supported through Phillip Broyles, the force's director, and Agent Astrid Farnsworth, who assists Walter inside laboratory research. The Fringe Division investigates cases concerning fringe science, ranging from transhumanist experiments gone wrong on the prospect of a destructive technological singularity into a possible collision of a couple parallel universes. The Fringe Division's operate often intersects with advanced biotechnology developed by a company called Enormous Dynamic, founded by Walter's previous partner, Dr. William Bell and run by their common close friend, Nina Sharp. The team is in addition watched silently by a group of bald, pale men who are generally called "Observers".
The show's standard cracking open sequence interplays images of the glyph symbols alongside phrases representing fringe science matters, such as "teleportation" in addition to "dark matter". Within the third time, with episodes that happened primarily in the parallel market, a new set associated with titles was used, following a similar structure, though tinted red rather then blue and using different fringe science concepts including "hypnosis" and "neuroscience". The difference in shade has led some supporters to call the prime universe the Blue one unlike the Red parallel just one. In the third time episode "Entrada", the titles used a mix of both the blue- and red-tinted versions, given the episode occurring equally in both universes. In the show's a couple flashback episodes, "Peter" and "Subject 13", a variation on the actual sequence, using retro graphics similar to 1980s technology and phrases like "personal computing" as well as "genetic engineering", was used, while for the dystopian potential third season episode "The Time We Died", a black-toned theme, with more dire terms like "hope" and "water" was introduced. The fourth season elite, "Neither Here Nor There" unveiled an amber-toned title string with additional new conditions.
